The Effects of the Halloween Series
The Halloween series is a horror movie franchise that consists of eleven films, as well as novels, comic books, merchandise, and a video game. The films primarily focus on the character of Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium as a child after he brutally murdered his sister. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois on Halloween night to kill again.
The original Halloween, released in 1978, was directed by John Carpenter and is considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time. It was followed by Halloween II (1981), which picked up immediately after the first film ended. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) was intended to be the final installment in the series, but due to its poor reception, it was followed by Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), which IGN called “the best sequel since Aliens”.
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), and Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later (1998) were all released direct-to-video. Carpenter returned to the franchise to executive produce and compose the score for Halloween: Resurrection (2002), which starred Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks. Rob Zombie directed a remake of the original 1978 film in 2007, simply titled Halloween. A sequel to Zombie’s remake, titled Halloween II, was released in 2009.
In 2018, Universal Studios announced that they would be producing a new film in the franchise with Blumhouse Productions. The untitled eleventh instalment is set for release on October 19, 2018.
The Costumes of the Halloween Series
While many are only familiar with the iconic Michael Myers mask, the Halloween series features a variety of different looks for the murderous holiday character. Over the course of eleven movies, multiple sequels, and a reboot, Michael Myers has sported several different costumes. Here is a look at all of the different Halloween costumes worn by Michael Myers throughout the franchise.
In the original 1978 film, Michael Myers wore a plain William Shatner mask that he purchased for $1.98 at a costume store. He paired this with a blue jumpsuit and workman’s boots. For the sequel, Halloween II, Michael wore the same costume with a few modifications. The jumpsuit was now covered in blood and the mask had been damaged, giving it a more bruised and battered appearance.
In Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, we see the first significant change to the killer’s outfit. Now sporting a black belly shirt and grey pants, Michael’s costume is significantly more form-fitting than his previous appearances. This new look is carried over into Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers where his shirt is now long-sleeved. However, in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, we see him return to his original blue jumpsuit from the first film.
The most drastic change to Michael’s appearance comes in Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of the original film. Here, Zombie gives him a much more creepy and dirty look. His clothes are tattered and his mask is covered in blood and dirt. In the sequel, Halloween II, Zombie once again updates Michael’s look, this time giving him a black robe and making his mask appear even more weathered and aged.
Finally, in 2018’s Halloween, we see yet another new take on the classic costume. Worn by actor James Jude Courtney, this updated version features a darker blue jumpsuit and a more textured mask that better emulates creator John Carpenter’s original design for the character. Whether you love it or hate it, there is no denying that Michael Myers has had some iconic looks over the years!
The Makeup of the Halloween Series
The Halloween film series consists of eleven films, as well as novels, comic books, merchandise, and a video game. The franchise primarily focuses on Michael Myers who was committed to a sanitarium as a child for the murder of his sister, only to escape many years later and terrorize the town of Haddonfield, Illinois.
The first film in the series was simply titled Halloween, and it was released in 1978. It was directed by John Carpenter and starred Jamie Lee Curtis. The film has since spawned sequels, remakes, reboots, comic books, novels, and even a video game.
The next film in the series was released in 1981. It was titled Halloween II and also directed by John Carpenter. However, unlike the first film which received critical acclaim, Halloween II was not as well-received by critics. The third film in the series was released in 1982 under the title Halloween III: Season of the Witch. This film did not feature Michael Myers nor take place in Haddonfield – it instead focused on a Celtic mask that caused people to murder during Samhain. Because of this change in direction (and likely due to the negative reception of Halloween II), the film was not well-received by audiences either and it marked the end of Carpenter’s involvement with the franchise.
After the release of Season of the Witch, eight more films were released between 1988 and 2009 before another reboot came out in 2018. Of those eight films (not including Season of the Witch), half were direct sequels to Carpenter’s original while the other half were unrelated stories that simply used Michael Myers as an opportunistic slasher villain (similar to Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th). The most recent entry in the franchise is Halloween (2018), which is a direct sequel to Carpenter’s original 1978 movie and ignores all other previous entries in the series except for its events.
The Story of the Halloween Series
The Halloween series is one of the most prolific in horror movie history. It all started with the original movie in 1978, which was directed by John Carpenter and starred Jamie Lee Curtis. The movie was a huge success, both financially and critically, and spawned a franchise that has continued to this day.
To date, there have been eleven movies released in the Halloween series. This includes the original movie, as well as ten sequels. The most recent entry in the franchise is 2018’s Halloween, which was directed by David Gordon Green and starred Curtis once again.
The Halloween series is particularly notable for its high degree of continuity. Unlike many other horror franchises, which often feature different characters and storylines in each installment, the Halloween movies have always followed the same general narrative. This has allowed the franchise to build up a rich lore and mythology, something that has made it a favorite among horror fans.
